Cometh the Hour, Cometh the Man

The human spirit is an incredible thing. When it really matters, or when the chips are down, there are those who kick into gear and display extraordinary capabilities and qualities that often take them by surprise.

This weekend I watched a video by Brian Gillett, a New Zealand businessman who penned a letter to his suppliers and creditors regarding his business position and policy in light of the segregation that's now happening in New Zealand. The NZ Government recently ruled that the unvaccinated will no longer have access to freedoms they have always enjoyed and are entitled to such as hairdressers, cafes, gyms, restaurants, cinemas etc.

In this moment, as businesses are being mandated to segregate the vaccinated from the unvaccinated, Brian decided to step up, even though he risked, in his words, "being slammed". He expressed his truth that medical apartheid isn't his way, nor the New Zealand way, and that he will not aid and abet any form of segregation. As he said, he wants to be on the right side of history and that keeping quiet meant consenting to the Government mandates.

In these moments of adversity, or indeed opportunity, the human spirit is capable of extraordinary things. Often when you're in the midst of changing gears when the moment requires, you don't tend to critique whether it's in your or not. You just do it because you're compelled to do it. It's like some other force drives you to step up and play a much bigger game - for the sake of your family, humanity or simply because of what's right and true.

When the chips are down, there's no other place to go but up. Given what's been happening over the last two years, I take my hat off to the Brian's of this world who are displaying huge courage, wisdom, leadership and individuality, just when we need it the most.

Regardless of your gender, you true colours, capabilities, attributes and qualities often come to the fore when it matters the most. You are made of stuff you may not yet have even realised - remember that.
